How to do Nitainam Lekhan?

The 4th Practice of Nitaibhakti

Write “निताइ” (Nitainam) mentally, or with your index finger in the air in front of you or on any surface, and minutely visualize the shapes and meanings of each of its 10 strokes while you write them one by one, in the sequence shown below.

1. Gaura Wrote Nam Day and Night

In Shri Chaitanya Bhagwat Adi-khanda 6.5-6, Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur writes:

krishnera NAAM mala ।।
rama, krishna, murari
mukunda, vanamali ।
padhena kutuhali ।।

“Lord Gauranga CONSTANTLY WROTE the NAMES of Krishna DAY AND NIGHT with blissful delight.”

Commentary: “Nirantara Likhena” and “Ahar-nisha Likhena” means Lord Gauranga was Himself writing the holy names constantly day and night. Why would the Supreme Personality of Godhead practice something day and night and that too with supremely blissful delight, if it was not an important part of daily bhajan?

Since Lord Gauranga Himself constantly wrote the holy names of the Lord day and night as a daily bhajan to inspire us by His own example. Since Nitai’s merciful name is unarguably a bona-fide holy name of the Lord, it is thus directly established that Nitainam Lekhan is an authentic bhajan to help us attain Harinam Ruchi.

2. Radha Wants Nam Written on Body

In the song Maribo Maribo Sakhi in his book Padyavali, Shrila Govinddas Kaviraj reveals what Radha tells Her beloved sakhis:

tomraa joteko sakhi
theke majhu sange ।
marana kaale krishna NAM
LIKHO mora ange ।।

“I request all of you sakhis, who are staying with Me, to please WRITE Krishna’s NAME on My body at the time of My death.”

3. Seeing Nitainam Enchants Every Soul

Shri Chaitanya Bhagavat, Antya Khanda 5.357, categorically establishes:

DARSHAN maatra sarva
jiva mugdha haya ।
NAM-tattva dui
nityananda-rasa-maya ।।

“All living entities become instantly enchanted in pure love when they SEE NITAI’S NAME, because both His name, and the form revealed by seeing His name are full of eternal bliss and loving mellows.” (By mentally writing Nitai’s name or writing it in the air, we are forced to see each syllable very clearly in front of us in our mind’s eye, due to the persistence of vision, thus totally captivating us with with pure love.)

4. Nitai’s Air Awards Krishna

Shri Chaitanya Bhagavat, Madhya Khanda 12.58, guarantees:

beka jaara gaaya ।
taahaareo krishna naa
chaadibe sarvathaaya ।।

“Krishna will never ever leave a person who is touched even once by the AIR from Nitai or His Holy Name.“

5. Touch Nitainam and Be Happy

Shrila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada emphatically assures us in his lecture on the Nitai-pada-kamala song given at Los Angeles on the 31st of January 1969:

“Just like if you touch electricity, immediately you become electrified. That is natural. Similarly, Nityananda is eternal happiness, IF YOU TOUCH NITYANANDA SOME WAY OR THE OTHER, then you become also eternally happy.” (Nitainam Lekhan is thus the infinite Nitaibhakti powerhouse of Kaliyuga. Some ask why the previous Acharyas did not introduce it themselves and just talked about it? The answer is that not everything is done by every Acharya himself due to Nitai’s will. We have seen many examples of this. They give the instruction in their vani and leave it to their humble followers to introduce it as per Nitai’s desire at the right time, place, and circumstances, simply to give the credit to their truly empowered followers.)

6. Touch Nitainam to Get Bhakti

In the 4th chapter of Hari Nam Chintamani, verse 52, Shrila Haridas Thakur and Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakur guarantee us:

vaishnava dehete thaake
shri krishnera shakti ।
sei deha sparshe anye
haya krishna-bhakti ।।

“Shri Krishna’s power rests in the body of a pure devotee. Simply by the TOUCH OF HIS BODY others instantly attain pure devotional service to Krishna.” (And who is a greater devotee than Lord Nitai Himself? And what is more higher than directly touching His syllables, which are fully non-different from His transcendental form? They are in fact the only original forms of God we can see face to face even in our embodied life.)

7.  All Offenses End by Nitainam

Shri Chaitanya Bhagavat reveals the secret in 3.22.136:

nityananda prasaade se
NINDAA haya kshaya ।।

“Only by the mercy of Nitai and His holy name, even the most unforgivable and heinous offense of criticizing devotees (which is not even forgiven by Gauranga) is destroyed forever!” (What to speak of the other less heinous nine offenses in the chanting of the Hare Krishna mahamantra! They are also easily uprooted by Nitainam Lekhan, Gunjan, and Kirtan. Krishna’s name in all forms considers the ten offenses and Gauranga’s name considers the offenses of criticizing devotees, etc. Whereas Nitainam obliterates all of them quickly.)

8. Nitainam Protects The Rejected

In Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya 4.35, Shrila Jiva Goswami declares to Lord Nitai:

gaura danda kara yadi
tumi rakshaa kara ।
tumi yaare danda kara
gaura taara para ।।

Srila Jiva Goswami prayed to Nitai, “If Lord Gauranga punishes and rejects a devotee, only You protect that soul and somehow still engage him or her in Gaur Krishna’s direct service. But if ever You would punish a soul (which You would never do), that soul would become estranged from Gaur Krishna for eternity.” (Therefore the syllables and sound of Nitai’s name are the most forgiving and liberal forms of mercy and love in the whole creation in the past, present, and future.)

9. Nam Akshar is More Merciful than Nam

Shrila Rupa Goswami reveals in his Namashtakam, Verse 6:

vaachyam VAACHAKAM
ity udeti bhavato
naam svaupa dvayam
purvasmaat param eva
tatraapi jaanimahe ।

“Please understand that the SYLLABLE-FORM of the Lord is even more MERCIFUL than the direct bodily form or the deity form of the Lord. It is because one can worship it any time without any consideration of rules and regulations unlike the deity form.”

10. Nam Akshar is God

Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakur sings in Gitavali, Namashtakam, Song 2:

jaya jaya harinam

“All glories, all glories to the holy name of the Lord, the divine abode of eternal transcendental bliss. The SYLLABLE-FORM of the Name is the SUPREME ABSOLUTE TRUTH.”

11. See Krishna in One Year by Lekhan

From the biography of Shrila Gaurkishor das babaji:

“A devotee came to Shrila Gaurkishor das babaji and told Him that he had been chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra for quite some time but he was not feeling the desired advancement and realizations. Babaji Maharaj asked Him to write the holy name in big size in his house and to deeply meditate on each and every syllable while chanting. He gave that person a guaranteed assurance that he will SEE Lord Shyamsundar face to face WITHIN JUST ONE YEAR if he did what he had suggested.” (This proves beyond doubt that the visualization of the syllable-form of the Lord grants perfection in Harinam in a very short time. Lord Nitai’s Shrila Virachandra Goswami also worshiped a Deity of the Syllables of the Holy Name while chanting.)

12. Writing Nam is 100 Times Noble

The Vaishnava Tantra and Sage Valmiki in Ramayana both emphatically state:

japaat shata gunam punyam ।
ram-naam PRALEKHANE ।।

“WRITING A MANTRA with visualization is 100 times more pious and beneficial than japa chanting.”

13. Lekhan Quickly Grants All Desires

The Brihan-Naradiya Purana confirms:

smarnaat kirtanaacchaiva
shravanal LEKHANAAD api ।
ram-naam akhileshtadam ।।

“All the innermost desires of a person are fulfilled by remembering, singing, hearing, WRITING, SEEING, and VISUALIZING the syllables of the holy name.”

14. Be Dear to God by Lekhan

The Lord Himself declares in the Hari Bhakti Vilasa 4.294:

dvaadashaAKSHAR mantraistu
niyuktaani kalevare ।
aayudhaani cha viprasya
mat SAMAH sa ca vaishnavah ।।

“A devotee whose body is decorated with the SYLLABLES of the Lord’s holy name is respected by Me as My EQUAL, and only he or she is worthy to be called a Vaishnava.”

15. Guru Writes Nam on Disciples’ Body

In Rasika Mangala, Eastern Part, First Wave, it is described:

“Shrila Rasikananda Thakur would constantly WRITE THE HOLY NAME on the bodies of his playmates and persuade them to dance.”

16. Seeing Nam Akshar in Seeing God

In the Valmiki Ramayan, Sundara Kanda, Chapter 36, Verses 2-4, it is stated:

ram nam ANKITAM cha
idam PASHYA devi anguliyakam ।
bhartaaram iva sampraataa
jaanaki muditaa abhavat ।।

“Sita felt as if She was personally seeing Her beloved Lord Ram Himself when She saw the syllables of the holy name of Her Lord CARVED on the ring presented to Her by Hanuman in Ashok Vatika.” (Nitainam Lekhan is like carving the holy name of Nitai in the mind or in the air for the supreme benefit of the whole world.)

17. Nam Akshar is Powerful than Nam Shabda

In the Ramayan, the stones thrown by Lord Ram Himself and the stones thrown even by the monkeys by chanting the name of Ram drowned in the sea, but the stones with His holy name written on them floated. This proves that the syllable-form of the Lord (Akshar-Parabrahma) is not only more merciful but also MORE POWERFUL than the Lord Himself or in some cases even more merciful than the sound of His holy name. (How much more powerful must be the writing Nitai’s name then, considering Rama is just a plenary expansion of Nitai Balarama?)

18. Nam Akshars Include Whole Creation

The demigod Ganapati wrote the holy name in Sanskrit on a tulasi leaf and circumambulated it. Due to this simple faith in the syllables of the holy name, he is eternally worshiped first before all other demigods. By doing this, he was considered the first to circumambulate the whole creation, not just our universe. This was due to the eternal truth that the syllable-form of the Lord INCLUDES THE WHOLE CREATION within it.

19. Writing of Nam on a Leaf

Shri Nrisingha Kavach, verse 21, in the Trailokya Vijaya, Samhita of Brahma, states:

bhurje vilikhya gutikam
svarnastham dharayed yadi
kanthe va dakshine bahau
narasimho bhavet svayam

“If one writes this down on a leaf or bark of a tree and keeps it within a golden capsule on his neck or right arm, Lord Nrsimhadeva will be personally present.”

20. Writing of Nam on Our Arm

Shri Nrisingha Kavach of Prahlad, verse 24, from the Brahmanda Purana, states:

bhuje va tala-patre va
kavacham likhitam shubham
kara-mule dhritam yena
sidhyeyuh karma-siddhayaha

“One may write this most auspicious prayer on his arm, or inscribe it on a palm-leaf and attach it to his wrist, and all his or her activities will become perfect.”

21. Goswamis Wrote Nam on Body

From Prema Vilasa, Chapter 6:

“Shrinivasa got up and bowed at their feet. With awe he observed their beautiful golden complexions. They (Sri Rupa and Sanatan Goswamipada) wore a tuft of hair on their head, their foreheads were painted with tilaka, and tulasi beads hung from their necks. The NAMES OF RADHA KRISHNA WERE PAINTED on their bodies, and they wore outer garments.”

22. In Goloka, Nam is Written on Body

In the Jaiva Dharma, Chapter 3, it is stated:

ami dekhitechi je, aprakrita nabadwipe shokolei tulasi mala, tilak o NAMAKSHAR dharon koriyachen. amio taha koribo.

Remembering his Gurudeva, Sannyasi Maharaj said, “I see that everyone in this divine land of Navadvipa wears a necklace of tulasi-beads, has tilaka on their foreheads, and THE WRITING OF THE HOLY NAMES ON THEIR BODIES. I shall also do the same.”

23. Written Name is Also a Deity

In the Krishna Lila Stava by Sanatana Goswami, verse 409, it it clearly stated:

pasana dhatu mrd daru sikata mani lekhaja

“O Krsna, appearing in the forms of stone, metal, clay, wood, sand-drawings, and jewels, the drawings of Your Name or Form, You temporarily or permanently appear in Your deity-incarnation.”

24. Nam Akshars are 24.5 Moons

Shri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.21.125 states:

haya kṛṣṇera svarūpa,
sārdha-cabbiśa akṣara tāra haya
se akṣara ‘candra’ haya,
kṛṣṇe kari’ udaya,
trijagat kailā kāmamaya

“Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is identical with the Vedic hymn known as the Kāma-gāyatrī, which is composed of twenty-four and a half syllables. Those syllables are compared to the 24.5 moons present in Kṛṣṇa’s form. Thus all three worlds are filled with transcendental desire.”

25. Touch Means Air

Shrimad Bhagavatam 7.12.27 states:

sparśenādhyātmani tvacam

“The instrument of touch, along with the sense objects of touch, should be given to Vayu or air.”

26. Nam Lekhan is Like Mental Japa

In the 17th Chapter of Hari Bhakti Vilasa, verse 158, it is clearly explained that visualization of the mantra-syllables is actually mental japa, which in turn is one thousand times more powerful than audible japa:

dhiyaa yad AKSHARA shrenya
VARNAAD varnam padaat padam ।
shabdaartha CHINTANaabhyaasah
sa ukto maanaso japah ।।

“Manasa Japa or mental chanting means the repeated practice, meditation, and VISUALIZATION of the shape and meaning of each and every SYLLABLE of a mantra in one’s heart, as one slowly progresses from one syllable to the next.”

Digdarshini tikaa (commentary) by Shrila Sanatana Goswami:

varnaad ekasmaat kramenanya-varnam vyaapya । evam padaat padam vyaapya । ittham shabdasya arthasya cha yac chintanam anusandhaanam tasya abhyaasah punah punar aavrittih ।।

“Mental Japa means that one meditates with one pointed attention on the form of each syllable of the mantra. When the meaning of one syllable of the mantra permeates the heart and mind during mental japa, then one should move on to concentrate on the meaning of the next syllable of the mantra. Only then will the mind become fully absorbed in the mantra. In this way, the constant drilling and training of the mind and the heart by repeatedly seeking out and realizing the transcendental meaning of each syllable of the mantra, through the process of deep and profound visualization on each syllable of the mantra, is the most powerful form of japa or chanting known as Manasa Japa.”

27. Mental Visualization of Nam

Hari Bhakti Vilasa 17.159 reminds us that in the Yagyavalkya Smriti it is revealed:

tasmaac-chata-guno bhavet ।
SAHASRO maanasah prokto
yasmaad dhyan-samo hi sah ।।

“Upanshu (murmuring) Japa is one hundred times more powerful than Vachika (loud) Japa. Manasa (mental) Japa, however, is one thousand times more powerful because it is direct Meditation.” (So Nitainam Lekhan is the topmost form of meditation also.)

Digdarshini tika by Shrila Sanatana Goswami:

upaanshu-japa-yuktasya japah shata-gunah syaad vaacikaj japaac chata-guno bhaved ity arthah ।।

“Upanshu Japa is one hundred times more powerful means that it is one hundred times more powerful than Vachika Japa.”

28. No Animal Life with Nam Visualization

In the Hari Bhakti Vilasa 17.160, the declaration from the scripture Mantrarnava is mentioned:

pashu-bhaave sthita mantrah
kevalam varna-rupinah ।

“Those who chant the mantra while simply uttering the syllables, but not visualizing and meditating on Their meaning, are chanting the mantra with an animalistic mechanical attitude.”

29. Nam Visualization is Always Pure

Hari Bhakti Vilasa 17.161 declares:

NA DOSHO maanase japye
sarva-deshe’pi sarvadaa ।
japa-nishtho dvija-shreshthah
sarva-yagya-phalam labhet ।।

“There can NEVER be any FAULT or defect whatsoever in manasa (mental) japa, and thus it can be performed in all places, at all times, and in all circumstances. O best of the brahmanas, that most fortunate person, who is staunchly and irrevocably engaged in mental japa always achieves the sublime fruits of all fire sacrifices in creation.”

Digdarshini tika by Shrila Sanatana Goswami:

ata eva maanaso japah
paramottama ity
aha-na dosha iti ।

“Thus manasa (mental) japa is Paramottama, which means the topmost spiritual practice in creation, since it has no faults of any kind.”

30. All Can Do Nam Visualization

The Hari Bhakti Vilasa 17.162 continues to establish the universal nature of mental japa and visualisation:

ashuchir vaa shuchir vaapi
gacchaams tishthan svapann api ।
mantraika-sharano vidvaan
manasaiva sadaabhyaset ||

“Thus, one should incessantly practice mental japa or visualisation whether one is in a clean or unclean condition, moving or stationary, and sleeping or awake. In this way, only one who takes exclusive shelter of the syllables of the mantra in all circumstances is a truly learned and self-realized soul.”

Digdarshini tika by Shrila Sanatana Goswami:

mantraika-sharana ity anyena
purashcharanaadi-paras tu
evaabhyaased ity abhipretam ||

“The final conclusion is that one should take full shelter of practicing manasa (mental) visualization, because it is completely independent of preliminary purificatory rites, the place, time, etc.” (And there is no other greater and merciful form of manasa japa vosualization than Nitainam Lekhan. Normally, meditative manasa japa is very difficult to practice until our mind becomes very calm and silent, but Nitainam Lekhan enables everyone to do it without having to wait for that.)

These are just some of the scriptural glories of Nitainam Lekhan for Harinam Ruchi. We fervently hope that these absolute and unequivocal truths from our Vedic scriptures and Acharyas will eradicate all doubts and solidify faith in all devotees about Nitainam Lekhan and Nitai Namaksharas, thus enabling all devotees to relish pure love in offenseless Harinam japa and kirtan, within no time.”

PS. Wherever needed, further explanation of the meaning has been given in brackets.

  1. Jay nitai
    gurumaharaj ji ..
Please accept this wretched soul’s obeisances
Bcoz of your most precious mercy we are able to sustain our spiritual life, we r always ever grateful to you.
Dear gurumaharaj ji is there any possibility to post all your jwells like proofs to translate in hindi also

  2. When Nitainam Lekhan was first being introduced into our regular sadhana bhajan daily, i had some doubt (as no proof book was manifested infront of my own eyes at the time / the proof book came a month or two later). So i did have some blind faith in Srila Gurudev and appreciation because He is risking His own good reputation to save me. He has never led me wrong before and He always tells me to use my time in the service of Nitai so why would He introduce something to waste my time? It must have some effect if my own Gurudev is doing it along with His daily chanting.

So i decided to learn the proper way to do Nitainam Lekhan with the idea that i fully trust my Gurudev. If you are blind and someone is holding your hand guiding you but you do not have full faith in them how far can you go?

After doing like this, i feel Srila Gurudeva’s kripa and sometimes i am in sync with His kathas (like once He talked about the cowherd boys of Ekachakra and just about 1 hour before that i was reading that part of Nityananda Caritamrita). The only thing that angers me is the disloyalty, especially to those who are your constant well wishers even if you reject Them.

  3. I stand testimony to that. After Nitai gunjan and Nitainam Lekhan, love of Gauranga and Krishna just overpowers me. Their prowess, power, beauty and pastimes captivates me no end. I need no one to forcefully make me love Krishna. It just spontaneously emerges. That’s the beauty of Nitainam.

  4. Nitainam Lekhan is truly the ultimate meditation. It brings inexpressible joy even if I do it for a few minutes with my eyes closed. It is like catching Nitai’s lotus feet. Such nice smaran. Every stroke is so meaningful. Inattentive chanting is uprooted by it.

    • Yes prabhuji it is really amazing, could feel a tinch of what you wrote. Superbooster…Need every Nitaibhakta blessings to dive deep in Nitainam Llekhan.

  5. If personally find it easier to visualize the curvy parts than the straight parts of the Nitainam. Does anyone have the same experience?

    • Yes, Nitai curves Himself for the fallen souls like us and Krishna curves Himself for Radharani.

  6. Jaya Nitai! The transcendental meanings of each stroke of Nitainam are unprecedented and unique! One can also factually perceive them while meditating on Them.

  7. Thank U sooooo much dearest Gurudeva for mercifully revealed this most confidential eternal truth…Heno bina Nitai bhai RadhaKrishna paayte naay..
Nitai karuna habe Vraje RadhaKrishna paabe..
    Drudh kori dharo Nitaiyera paay..

  9. Srila Gaurakisora das Babaji Mahasaya said within one year and Your Divine Grace has said a short time. We should all start doing massive Namlekhan so this short time becomes shorter.

  10. Nitai Namlekhan has now become a daily blissful sadhna ,thank you for giving naamlekhan to us ! Harinaam without naamlekhan seems so dry and tasteless now ! Nitai naam lekhan is so easy way to get unattainable naamruchi in Harinaam for us Kali jivas !Joy Nitai! Hare Krishna!

    • By the mercy of Doyal Nitai and Nitainam, even a dumb fool and blind wretch like me was shown a drop of this mysterious truth about Harinam-ruchi. All glory belongs only to both of Them. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

    • Dear Gurudeva it’s only you who has given us the ( fallen souls of kaliyuga) the most easiest path of Nitainam lekhan to achieve Radhe Shyam. So all glories to you for your sacrifices.

  11. Thank you Shrila Gurudev for the topmost blissful process, feeling very fortunate to make it a part of my daily sadhna, which is not only boosting my bhajan, but also giving me a solid hope that, i will attain dham in this very life only.
Ohe Naam Akshar Tumi Sarva sakti dhar, jivera kalyan viterane!!!!

  12. Thank you for your first-hand report and simple faith dear Nitaiseva das. It is very inspiring. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

  14. True, the only truth in this world is Nam. Nam is always present in this material world. The Lord Himself appears here only occasionally but leaves Himself in the form of Nam to help us. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

  15. Very nice connection between shabdh brahma and akshar brahma, they are complimentary to each other. Wah !! Jai ho gurudeva apki

  16. Thank you so much for revealing this confidential truth dear Gurudev 🙏🙏🙏 All glories to You! Nitainam ki Jaya! Nitainam lekhan ki Jaya!

  17. I just got a tiny drop of mercy from Nam-Akshar-Parabrahma, which is non-different from the infinite Lord Himself. Who am I to reveal such a confidential truth? हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

  18. I feel it’s one of the biggest mercy that Nitainam lekhan is revealed. By this process, Visualisation on Nam Akshar has become so easy.

    • I am still surprised that this truth has been eventually released. And even more astonished that I was chosen an instrument for this. Only Doyal Nitai can use the lowest to reveal the highest because of His unorthodox merciful nature. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

    • This humble blog of mine is my offering to share it with them. I am not attached if anyone accepts it or not though, nor do I want to force it on anyone against their wishes. I can only request all Gaudiyas with folded hands and a straw in my mouth to try it for a few days and see how much their Harinam-ruchi and Shravan-kirtan-ruchi gets exponentially increased by doing it. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.

  19. Thank you Shrila Gurudeva for giving the precious gift of Nitainam lekhan to the entire mankind. All glories to you.

  20. I noticed that the first section of strokes ‘नि’ is perfectly explaining Sambanda jnana. Nitai offers Himself to us and when we accept the offer of Nitai then blessings are sure to come. And the fourth stroke solidifies our position as Nitai das.

This is such a wonderful visualization Gurudeva. Thank You for this. Joy निताइ

    • There are infinite waves of sphurtis emanating from Nitainam lekhan dear Nitai-bhikshu das It makes our heart soft and malleable with transcendental emotions and humility by awakening the remembrance of the nitya-lila. हरे कृष्ण. जय निताइ.
